Born in Tijuana, Mont Virgen is a Mexican visual artist who grew up visiting San Diego weekly to see family. This dual identity has often led his work to explore the idea of balance. Crafted from polished stainless steel, considered one of the most robust materials, three 47 x 60-inch panels are positioned in one continuous line to represent the strength of the bond between two border towns. South (on the left) and North (on the right) each offer their own energies meet in the middle to create Home—a completion and harmony of shape. As the viewer walks along the space, the red acrylic figure resembles the experience of driving by the border, until they nearly disappear when faced directly. The reflective nature of the piece is a signature for Mont Virgen, inviting viewers to consider the lives that are lived between the lines and our role in growing them for the better.
